BOTTOMS UP! - BIA HOI IN HANOI
Traveling to Hanoi, you will be not only served with professional services in tip-top hotels, but you also melt into the simplest bars on Earth with small plastic chairs on pavements and full glasses of BEER on tables. Come and enjoy Vietnamese beer and see how men drink beer with the best liked refrain: “yo yo yo 100 percent”…
WHAT IS SPECIAL?
Besides diverse kinds of domestic and imported beer brands, “BIA HOI” (say "bia" if you wish to sound local) is the most enjoyed beverage in Vietnam with less than one fourth of $1 for a glass only. The first glass slowly goes down and before knowing its 3 hours later, your taste just starts adapting, but don’t worry because the bill won’t spoil your wallet too much.
Vietnamese tend to drink beer in huge quantities. There are extremely many groups of four or five men with 24 empty bottles on their table at nightfall. To be humorous to share, the more beer they drink, the better their businesses are in Vietnam.
To find out these places in Hanoi, it is as a piece of cake. They are everywhere and often on pavements on even a street’s corner. To many tourists, listening to mixed sounds which are from motorbike traffic, passing buses and yo yo yo sounds; drinking beer and just observing what's happening around them are much more interesting than sitting on deluxe furniture when wishing to try “bia hơi” in Hanoi.
Nobody minds if the table is not removed dirty and litters yet. These are simply a place where everybody comes to cool down their mind to be free from worry after a period of work – from drivers who go back from a stressful shift to professors using “bia hoi” in order to friendly begin their conversation.
Vietnamese (I merely mention a group of friends which have not seen each other a long time. To me, "Long time no see" means just a couple of days) sometimes have several side orders in order to lengthen time for drinking and inspire to reveal their funiest and most secret stories. These favorite dishes seem to match very well with beer such as boiled or roasted groundnuts, Vietnamese fermented pork roll (often eaten cold), roasted rice pancakes (eaten with chilli sauce) and a plate of stir fried vegetables. They are reasonable too!
Wandering on some streets in Ha Noi, by chance you can hear the sentence “Bottoms up!” and question yourself “what is the only thing that makes these men forget their wives and homes?” The answer is “bia hơi only”!
